Northstar News

The Bible Quiz teams took the early morning bus trip to Boon on January 7th. It was a good day for the Patriots. The Varsity was 6-0, and the JV team was 5-1. They defeated the Petoskey JV team who hadn’t lost a match since the Boon quiz last year; a 25 straight, winning streak.

Jeremy Crowder from Manistique led all Varsity scores with 310 and Hughey Fowler from the Soo had 300. Logan Handrich led Northstar with 260; Megan Williams had another strong day with 130 and Faith Martindale scored 100. Hope Hemmes added 80 and Andrea Hemmes 70.

The Patriots took the first match easily: Boon 10, Petoskey 80, Northstar 270. After sitting out two rounds Northstar came back in: Northstar 160, Manistique 120, Soo 60. The last varsity match was a scary one. Half way through it was Petoskey 70, Northstar 50, Manistique 80. The Patriots came alive and answered 8 of the last 9 questions for a final score of Petoskey 90, Northstar 210 and Manistique 70.

Logan still leads the conference with 1270 points, 100 ahead of Elisabeth Teller. Hope Hemmes is 5th with 550, Megan is 6th with 490. Andrea Hemmes is 8th and Faith Martindale is 10th at 220 to make all varsity starters in the top ten. The standings going into the final quiz are: Northstar 23-1, Petoskey 19-5, Manistique 10-14, the Soo 7-17 and Boon 1-23.

In the JV competition it was the first round in which Northstar handed Petoskey their only loss of the year: Boon 20, Petoskey 160, Northstar 220. Caleb Handrich led the team with four answers and all five quizzers scored. The second round was Northstar 380, Manistique 10, and the Soo 0. Marcus Hemmes quizzed out to lead to the near shut-out.

In the final round Petoskey got revenge by starting out answering eight of the first nine questions for a 160-20-0 lead; the young Patriots finally got going by answering nine of the last eleven questions but fell short. That final was Petoskey 190, Northstar 150 and Manistique 10.

Caleb Handrich had his best quiz-day ever with 150 points to lead the great team effort. Marcus Hemmes had 120, Tanner Plesscher, Bradlee Williams and Andrew Hemmes each added 80. Eva Hemmes had 60, Leah and Samuel Handrich each added 40, and Carson and Kaydence Williams and Lanie Plesscher chipped in 20 each. Every team member scored.

Tanner Plesscher remains in 6th place overall with 360 points. In 7th is Carson Williams (290) and Lanie Plesscher is 8th with 270. Caleb Handrich just missed 10th by 10 points. The JV standings are: Petoskey 23-1, Northstar 18-6, Boon 11-13, Manistique 6-18 and the Soo 2-22.

The final quiz will be in Manistique on February 4th at 10:00 a.m. Please note the earlier start time, because volleyball and basketball seasons will begin that day also.

The 30th Annual Yooper Rally was a great blessing with messages from Bro. Eddie Lapina, who was one of the original speakers in 1992. Pastor Mel Matchinski, who was saved at a Yooper Rally, gave two challenging messages as well.

We were blessed to have Bro. Lapina preach for us on Sunday morning. His Sunday school lesson on “How to Resolve Your Conflicts with God,” was a classic. The outline is available in laminated form at the church office.

On the 21st the Academy presented their play, “Go To The Mountains” featuring our senior girls. Andrea Hemmes played the head baker who took a stand for her family and faith. Gloria Martindale played the role of the Queen, who found faith through very troublesome times in the kingdom. Alumnus Brandon Williams helped out by doing a great job playing the role of the King. Thank you, Miss Bev for a great play and Bro. Marc for your assistance.
